Our goal as a 501 (c) (3) public charity is to preserve, promote, and celebrate the unique cultural aspects of the Central Appalachian region.
This includes providing opportunities for mountain residents and artists to create and participate in mountain cultural events including music, plays, trade shows, arts, craft, and the appreciation of the literary and historical accomplishments of the region.
Mountain Heritage Museum in St. Paul, Virginia, serves not only as a cultural center offering classes and workshops, but also as a collection of historical artifacts. This includes hundreds from coal mining, logging, railroading, farming, the Civil War, and Native American and Appalachian natural history. Visitors can view dozens of pictures and prints about these subjects and more, including the largest UMWA historic display south of Washington, D.C..
Formats and media will include workshops, conventions, stage shows, print, video, cable and internet access to all residents and visitors. Mountain Heritage published two science textbooks provided for free to area students.
A major goal is to expose Central Appalachian students to the unique aspects of mountain life, which will instill appreciation and pride in the region’s accomplishments, natural resources and contributions to America’s growth and development. Job creation for unemployed and underemployed residents is a concurrent goal.
